the beginning of the end

it was the beginning of the end
or maybe the end of a beginning
because my penchant for so long
was to engage in one more lateral
arabesque
deluding myself again
that I had left the runway
and was flying high in the wild blue yonder
of a future entrusted soley
to my past
defining all I knew
as
then

I truly loved and admired Paul Chelko. He taught me to embrace love and life and let it flow through me as a writer/journalist. Paul was an extra-special spirit, and extraordinary magician. When I was President of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists in the mid-80's, Oprah Winfrey agreed to address our annual affair. Paul volunteered to create a portrait of Oprah for me to present her. He did it in less than a week --Oprah was moved to tears. Chelko remains the most exciting, enlightening, colorful, controversial and "free" friend I have ever had or known. I love him and truly miss him. ME
